Letters about Literature

The first year the Iowa Center for the Book participated in the Letters About Literature program, an Iowa student won the national competition.

Since then, thousands of Iowa students, grades 4-12, have participated by writing a letter to an author, explaining how that author’s work changed their way of thinking about the world or themselves.

To honor these students for their love of reading and writing, the top Letters About Literature participants from every part of Iowa are invited to a ceremony in Des Moines. Over the years, five of those students have been national winners in this prestigious Library of Congress program.

There are three levels of competition, with cash prizes in each level for first, second, and third place as well as honorable mentions. Your dollars help fund these awards for outstanding Iowa students.

All iowa reads

Established in 2003, the All Iowa Reads program was one of the ICB’s first projects and continues to be one of its most popular. The purpose of All Iowa Reads is to foster a sense of unity through reading.

Each year a volunteer committee selects a title that will inspire sustained, spirited and in-depth discussion, raising issues relevant to Iowans. Then, within communities across the state, people come together to talk about the book and share their point of view.

The ICB provides book reviews, discussion questions and publicity materials to foster successful discussions. And the Foundation helps pay for copies of the book and, when possible, organize visits and presentations by the author.

With more than a decade of success, the program has expanded to offer Kids All Iowa Reads and Teen All Iowa Reads. Your donation will be used to help fund these important programs, increasing literacy and community among readers of all ages.

Iowa literacy Award

The Library of Congress Literacy Awards program honors organizations that have made outstanding contributions to increasing literacy through innovation and promotion.

Organizations across Iowa may self-nominate or be nominated by others. The Iowa Center for the Book names an annual award winner and presents the award, including a monetary prize, at a ceremony at the State Law Library of Iowa in Des Moines.

When you donate to the Foundation, you’ll help fund the financial award and provide an incentive to more organizations to improve literacy throughout the state.

“HISTORY OF THE

BOOK” EXHIBIT

Funded by a major grant from the Foundation, this hands-on exhibit brings to life the invention of writing, paper and books. It has traveled to public libraries and other institutions across Iowa, thanks to a creative collaboration between the Iowa Center for the Book and the University of Iowa Center for the Book.

Your donation will help keep this exhibit traveling to communities throughout the state, providing education about the enduring role of books in our culture.
